Celebrating the centenary of the Davies Sisters at the Hall and all they did for music in Wales.
Holst’s For Gregynog was written in 1933 for the Gregynog choir after he attended the first Gregynog Festival, but he died in May the following year before its first performance. The manuscript is kept at Gregynog and we begin our concert with it.
Walford Davies gave up life in London in 1918 at the insistence of the sisters to dedicate his work to the music of Wales (he became Professor of Music at Aberystwyth University). The sisters funded the Chair. He was a highly important national musician who spent much time at Gregynog. He designed the organ in the Music Room.
Peter Warlock never visited the hall. He was never invited – hardly surprising as the sisters (and the hall) were tee-total and PW was a notable drinker. But his family home was only seven miles away at Abermule and he lived there between 1921 and 24, dying in 1930.
Elgar and Vaughan Williams were frequent visitors.

Sunday night
Although the course finishes on Sunday afternoon, there should be some rooms available if you wish to stay a further night, with the possibility of an evening meal if the group is large enough. The fees for this will be payable direct to Gregynog Hall, and are likely to be £85 B&B for 2 persons sharing, £70 single, and £20 for supper.
Please indicate when booking if you would like to stay overnight on Sunday night and/or have Sunday supper, so we can give numbers to the Hall.
